Crafting the Perfect Postpartum Gift Basket

New moms have lots of visitors, and while many people think to bring mama a meal, most don’t consider her as a person who might need a little pick-me-up. This is a love letter to you, visitors. A little guide, if you will, to create the ultimate gift basket that the new mom in your life will love.

First off, let's talk about the actual basket. If you can afford a high quality basket, I recommend putting your items in something mama can reuse, like a diaper caddy or durable toy/blanket basket. I also loved using plastic bins for medicine and toiletry items. If you do use a standard gift bag, I suggest getting one that is not baby themed. I received more baby themed bags than I could possibly ever reuse.

It is so important for moms, like everyone else, to stay hydrated. A great item to throw into a gift basket is a bottle with a straw and some Liquid IV. I do recommend avoiding the energy multiplier. Too much caffeine can damage mama’s milk supply if she is breastfeeding. We don’t want that!

I love food, especially snacks. The best feeling was receiving not only meals but snack foods and my favorite drinks. There were many days where all I wanted was a coke or a bag of chips but didn’t have any at the house and no means to go to the store. Keep in mind, mamas cannot drive for two weeks after delivery, and most dads have to return to work during that time frame. I know there are some areas where grocery delivery isn’t an option for moms, like here in rural Mississippi. Don’t know what snacks she’d like? Get a variety! Maybe a few healthy things like granola bars and yogurt plus some junk food favorites like gummy worms and Cheetos. I promise, what mama doesn’t eat, daddy will.

For a great gift that will be well used for a long time, add some hair ties and clips. I have my hair up for most of the day. I get very hot, and I’m always doing something with the baby. The last thing I want to deal with is my hair in my face. Most houses have an invisible gremlin who runs off with all sorts of hair accessories, so you can never have too many ponytails or clips!

After months of not being able to reach my feet, they had become very dry. Not only that, but they ached so bad from carrying all the extra weight. I could not wait to pamper my feet. With that said, give the mom in your life a good foot cream and/or bath salts. If you really want to go the extra mile, include a gift card for a pedicure at a nearby salon!

Moms wash their hands a lot. Just think about how many diapers a baby goes through a day! All that washing can be very drying for your hands, so I recommend grabbing a quality hand cream for a postpartum gift. You can give a good moisturizing hand soap as well.

Whether breast or bottle feeding, moms may want something to pass the time as they feed their little one. I recommend adding an encouraging book or devotional about motherhood. I was given this book and have really learned a lot.

At the end of the day, all a mom really wants is to be remembered. Don’t stop by only to see the baby. Make sure mom knows you’re there for her, too. Having a conversation about her as a person, not just as a mom, and a little postpartum gift basket would definitely brighten her day.
